Kidde Graviner MK5 Oil Mist Detector

The Graviner MK5 has been protecting diesel engines since the first oil mist hazard was identified over 50 years ago. It monitors the density of oil mist in the crankcase and triggers an alarm when density exceeds a preset threshold. The MK5 is now obsolete — limited spare parts are available. Upgrade to MK7 is recommended.

The Graviner MK5 monitors oil mist density in diesel engine crankcases and activates an alarm when the density exceeds a preset threshold, triggering engine stop or slowdown. It has been used by hundreds of ships over several decades.

As authorized Kidde Graviner OMD distributors, our Technical Department has the capability and experience to rebuild and repair spare parts. Our workshop is equipped with all necessary instruments to carry out tests on complete oil mist detectors and individual spare parts.

The Graviner MK6 uses optical sensing based on light scatter rather than obscuration — enabling very small, rugged detectors that are engine-mounted using standard oil mist detector ports. Each detector has its own means of sample acquisition, completely eliminating the need for sample pipes.

The MK6 retains the long-established differential measuring system, providing high sensitivity while maintaining maximum false alarm rejection. Multiple internal light sources ensure a single component failure will not cause the loss of a detector.

The control unit can be configured to monitor from 1 to 8 engines. Detector addresses are identified and associated with the appropriate engine. Deviation levels, average alarm levels and alarm output requirements are all set from the control unit. The large LCD display provides real-time access to detector signals and indicates average oil mist levels for each engine.

The Graviner MK7 is an auto-addressed oil mist detection system. Each engine-mounted control unit can be configured to monitor 1 to 10 detectors, each monitoring a single crankspace. Alarm levels and alarm output requirements are all set from the control unit or the optional display unit.

The touch screen display shows on demand the signal from each detector and indicates the oil mist level for each engine. In the event of an alarm, the display immediately shows the oil mist signals for the relevant engine. Each detector on an engine can be displayed on demand and automatically under alarm conditions.
