Responding to the recent requirements of engine builders, the manufacturer has developed the MD-SX oil mist detector which is of sensor type, and consists of multiple sensor units that are directly inserted via a sidewall of the crankcase and fitted to each cylinder of the diesel engine, it also has a controller for integrated control of these units via communication means.

The detector has already gone through type approval certificate tests by major classification societies NK, LR, DNV, BV, ABS, GL, KR, CR and CCS, and CE marking.

Compactification and improvement of reliability, realization of easiness of maintenance

A natural diffusion system has been used by this detector, which is based on technology for the detection of oil mist concentrations that has been built up over the years by Daihatsu, augmented with new techniques and ideas. The requirement of the system is no sucking mechanism or drive air/piping for mist detection by the sensor units. The detection of mist concentrations is done by an optical dispersion system by a compact arrangement, which contributes to ease of maintenance and greater reliability.

Flexible system constitution

There are 16 maximum number of detection points, which means detectability at eight points in twin engines. The configuration of the system is made flexible, including the fitting of the controller.

Early detection / a foresight of a serious accident of an engine

By the use of key switches and liquid crystal display (LCD), the controller has been improved in terms of operating with ease, with its self-diagnosing function it can also monitor the overall state of the device, including the sensor units.

The oil mist concentration in the crankcase is constantly monitored by the detector, which properly indicates the mist level and, if the concentration is raised due to any reason beyond a set point like by the overheating of the bearings or any other cause, it issues an alarm. Accordingly, the device makes possible early detection or prediction of what might otherwise develop into-serious trouble not only in low-speed marine engines but also medium-speed and high-speed diesel.

Oil Mist Monitor DOMM

Daihatsu Diesel Mfg. Co., Ltd. has put OIL MIST DETECTOR continuously on the market since 1976. The model MD-SX which is of sensor type mounted on a crankcase was developed in the year 2004. The sensor is so mounted that the sensing part is sticking into the crankcase, and can directly measure the oil mist density inside the crankcase.
Through piping, the conventional systems have to take out oil mist for measurement from inside the crankcase.
The new system provides the following merits: the oil mist level is sent out for the controller as a digital signal.

In recent years, as fire prevention measures for tankers, earlier detection of abnormal oil mist levels in the engine room is required as it is thought to be effective in pinpointing the cause and its measures. The manufacturer has further advanced MD-RSX type detectors into OIL MIST MONITORING DEVICE, OMM type, whose development is based on the technologies of MD-SX type many classes give type approval.
The new OMM type is capable of showing visual display on oil mist level where it is likely to generate.

The system does not guarantee previention of disaster, such as a fire.
